Tell us a little bit about you

Hello! I’m Hyekel Nathaniel, a Senior Rhythm Cycling Instructor and the Business Development and Partnerships Manager at Absolute Boutique Fitness Singapore. I graduated from a local university majoring in Politics, Law and Economics and aspired to be a policy maker and was going for rhythm cycling classes in 2014 as a form of getaway to destress. TLDR, Over the past five years, I have gained a reputation for my high-energy classes, motivational coaching, and ability to create an immersive and empowering workout experience for Absolute’s members. I’m known for my dynamic teaching style, incorporating a combination of routines, inspiring music, and positive reinforcement to push our members to achieve their fitness goals.

What made you pursue the career path you are now on? What was the main catalyst?

Fitness and wellness have always been an integral part of my life, I’ve been very active as young as 9 years old, joining CCAs from hockey, touch rugby and track & field. I’ve a genuine passion for helping others improve their health and well-being, and rhythm cycling became my avenue for doing so. The main catalyst for pursuing this career path was my own transformative experience with rhythm cycling. I realised the incredible physical and mental benefits it offers, and I wanted to share that with others. Seeing how this form of exercise positively impacted my life it inspired me to become an instructor and guide others on their own fitness journey.

What does your typical day look like for you? Is it as fun and smooth as it often looks?

A typical day as a rhythm cycling instructor involves a mix of planning, teaching and connecting with members. I spend a lot of my time curating playlists, choreographing routines and preparing for classes. Once I’m in the studio, I lead energetic and engaging sessions, providing guidance, motivation and ensuring participants have a safe and enjoyable experience.

Outside of teaching, I engage with members, answer to their questions and provide them with support. While it can be fun and rewarding, it requires careful time management, maintaining energy throughout the day and adapting to unforeseen circumstances. It may not always be as smooth as it appears, but the joy of helping others achieve their fitness goals makes it worthwhile. At night, I always switch off and meditate to recenter my energy and spend time with my family and friends.

Do you recommend getting a fitness qualification/certification over gaining actual experience first, and why?

Both fitness qualifications/certifications and practical experience are important in the fitness industry. A fitness qualification provides a strong foundation of knowledge, teaching techniques and safety protocols. It equips instructors with the necessary skills to design effective workouts and cater to clients’ needs.

However, gaining actual experience is equally valuable as it allows instructors to apply their knowledge, refine their teaching style, and develop their unique approach. I recommend aspiring instructors to pursue a fitness qualification/certification first and then actively seek opportunities to gain practical experience, as the combination of both will contribute to their growth and success.

How did recent advances in tech & innovation help elevate your career? What are some examples? Is it always positive?

Recent advances in technology and innovation have had a significant impact on the fitness industry, including rhythm cycling. These advancements have helped me elevate my career in several ways. For instance, wearable fitness trackers and heart rate monitors allow me to monitor members’ exertion levels and provide personalised feedback during classes. Fitness apps and online platforms have expanded my reach beyond the physical studio, enabling me to create and share content, connect with a wider audience and also virtual classes – Absolute Cycle Home Edition.

Social media platforms have also played a crucial role in building my brand, attracting new members and fostering a sense of community among my followers. However, it’s important to strike a balance and use technology in a way that enhances the in-person experience rather than replacing it entirely. Maintaining genuine human connection and personal interaction remains paramount in my approach.

How do you define success, and what are some of the challenges you had to overcome?

I define success as the ability to positively impact lives, inspire others, and help them achieve their fitness goals. It’s about creating an inclusive and supportive community where individuals feel empowered to push their limits and transform their lives through fitness. Some of the challenges I have faced include:

Overcoming self-doubt: As an instructor, it’s important to exude confidence and positivity, but there were times when I doubted my abilities. Overcoming this challenge involved continuous learning, practice and building a strong support system.

Adapting to different members needs: Every member is unique, with varying fitness levels, goals and preferences. Tailoring workouts and providing personalised guidance for a diverse group of riders can be challenging. I had to learn to be flexible, attentive and adaptive to ensure everyone feels valued and included.

Balancing personal well-being: The demands of being an instructor can be physically and mentally exhausting. It took time to establish a self-care routine, prioritise my own well-being and find a balance between work and personal life.

Who do you look up to in terms of learning from and who’s your ‘idol’?

I look up to various fitness professionals who have made a significant impact in the industry. Some of my role models include renowned instructors, fitness educators and thought leaders who consistently deliver exceptional experiences, demonstrate expertise and promote a positive mindset. My idols are definitely the mentors I have, who see my strength and areas that I can improve as an instructor to our members. While I draw inspiration from these individuals, I also value the unique journeys and stories of my fellow instructors and members, as they teach me valuable lessons and contribute to my growth.

What are your biggest challenges to overcome with your clients?

One of the biggest challenges with members is addressing their individual limitations and helping them overcome self-doubt or fears. Some members may struggle with physical limitations or lack confidence in their abilities, which can hinder their progress. As an instructor, I strive to create a supportive environment, offer modifications or alternatives and provide consistent encouragement to help members overcome these challenges. Building trust and rapport with each member is crucial to understanding their needs and tailoring the experience accordingly.

What do you enjoy most about your career?

What I enjoy most about my career is witnessing the positive impact I can make on people’s lives. Seeing members achieve their fitness goals, witness their physical transformations and experience the mental and emotional benefits of exercise is incredibly rewarding. The sense of community and connection I foster among my members is also something I cherish. The energy and enthusiasm they bring to each class motivates me and reminds me why I love what I do. My members and I have created a community together – we meet for dinners, celebrate birthdays, travel and party together too (work hard, party even harder! haha)

What products and tools do you like to use in your practice?

In my practice, I utilise a range of products and tools to enhance the rhythm cycling experience. Some of my favorites include:

High-quality stationary bikes: Having reliable and well-maintained bikes is essential for ensuring a smooth and safe workout environment. Our operations team works hard in maintaining them everyday when there are no classes by cleaning them thoroughly, making repairs and maintenance.

Heart rate monitors and fitness trackers: These tools allow me to monitor mines and the members’ exertion levels and provide real-time feedback on their performance.

Sound system: A quality sound system with excellent speakers is crucial for creating an immersive and energising atmosphere during classes. Clear communication is essential during classes, and using microphones and audio equipment helps me effectively instruct and motivate participants.

Music streaming platforms: Access to a diverse range of music through streaming platforms enables me to curate playlists that suit different class themes and preferences.

What do you do on your spare time? How do you invest your time?

In my spare time, I prioritise self-care and personal development. I engage in activities that help me recharge, such as practicing yoga, meditation, or exploring other fitness modalities to expand my knowledge. I also invest time in continuous education by attending workshops and online classes from instructors all around the world to stay updated with the latest fitness trends, teaching methodologies and industry research. Additionally, I enjoy spending quality time with my family, friends and my beautiful 2 year-old niece. Reading books helps me to find different ways to approach coaching and also just hanging out by the pool – who doesn’t love that right!

What does your training regimen look like?

As a rhythm cycling instructor, maintaining my own fitness is essential to deliver high-energy classes. My training regimen typically includes a combination of cardio exercises, strength training and flexibility work. I incorporate rhythm cycling sessions into my routine to refine my own skills, challenge my endurance and stay connected to the experience my clients have. Additionally, I explore other forms of exercise such as HIIT workouts, Pilates (yes! Absolute also offers Pilates classes), or outdoor activities to keep my fitness regimen diverse and engaging.

Why did you get into the fitness industry?

I got into the fitness industry because I have always been passionate about health, wellness and helping people. I believe that physical activity and exercise have the power to transform lives, improve mental well-being and foster a sense of empowerment. Being able to inspire and guide individuals on their fitness journeys is incredibly fulfilling to me. I wanted to combine my passion for fitness with my desire to make a positive impact, which led me to pursue a career as a rhythm cycling instructor.

What is your fitness specialty and why?

My fitness specialty lies in rhythm cycling. I’m passionate about this form of exercise because it offers a unique blend of cardiovascular conditioning, strength building and mind-body connection. The rhythmic movements, powerful music and supportive community create an immersive experience that motivates participants to push beyond their limits. I specialise in creating challenging yet enjoyable routines, focusing on proper form and technique, as well as fostering a positive and inclusive environment. Rhythm cycling allows me to combine my love for fitness, music and coaching, making it my chosen specialty.

Currently, I’m part of the training team where we run workshops for our current instructors to elevate ourselves and also train new batches of instructors too.

What is your mission, and what are your values and aspirations?

My mission is to inspire and empower individuals to prioritise their health, embrace fitness as a lifestyle and discover their inner strength. I aim to create a supportive and inclusive environment where people feel motivated to challenge themselves and achieve their fitness goals. My core values revolve around passion, authenticity, inclusivity and continuous growth. I aspire to constantly evolve as an instructor, stay up to date with industry trends, explore innovative ways to engage and inspire my clients…and hopefully one day to bring this to an international level.

How relevant are fitness qualifications/certifications today?

Fitness qualifications/certifications are highly relevant and essential in today’s fitness industry. They provide a strong foundation of knowledge, teaching methodologies, safety protocols and industry best practices. Fitness qualifications demonstrate a commitment to professionalism and a dedication to continuous learning. They equip instructors with the skills necessary to design effective workouts, understand clients’ needs and adapt to various fitness levels. Additionally, certifications can enhance an instructor’s credibility and provide reassurance to clients that they are receiving quality instruction. In a rapidly evolving industry, ongoing education and certifications help instructors stay current and deliver safe and effective fitness experiences. All Absolute instructors will go through the training at The Absolute Academy to be certified and qualified to teach classes.

What is your preferred method of encouragement towards clients?

My preferred style of encouragement is positive, empowering and inclusive. I believe in fostering a supportive and motivating environment where clients feel seen, valued and capable. I provide specific and genuine praise to acknowledge their efforts and progress. I also emphasise the importance of self-care, self-acceptance and celebrating individual milestones. I strive to create a judgment-free space where clients feel empowered to challenge themselves, take risks and embrace their own unique fitness journey. By focusing on their strengths and fostering a growth mindset, I aim to inspire members to surpass their own expectations and unlock their full potential.
