Eating to live or living to eat - What's the missing link?

These statements are often made to convey either the notion of complete self-control over food, or complete control of food, over self. The prior is a cliché statement from bodybuilders who seem to take pride in consuming large amounts of “blend” foods purely for the purposes of fueling their physical development. The latter defines the modern ‘foodie’ who will travel to the moon and back just to have a taste of the latest food creations in town.
Yet, for the majority of the time, our relationship with food can never be described in such a “black or white” fashion, especially when emotions and stress are involved. Eating based on emotions is that grey area that everyone will experience at one point or the other. This can often lead to a situation, where despite knowing that certain foods are not beneficial for the body, individuals continue to repeat their actions of eating them. The result is weight gain, self-image issues, self-hate, lowered confidence, increased stress, and the cycle perpetuates.
This seminar will delve into the topic of emotional eating, identifying how our actions are a product of emotional, mental and physiological processes, as well as the steps we can take to emerge out of this negative cycle with a better control and relationship with food.

The feet are the foundation of the body, so a foot problem can cause not only local pain but reverberate up the body causing pain and dysfunction into the knee, hip, pelvis, and spine. Learning how to assess and treat joint dysfunction in the foot is crucially important.
In this pre-recorded workshop, we will learn how to assess and treat joint hypomobilities that can contribute to or cause uncontrolled/excessive pronation, rigid high arch, hallux valgus, and big toe stiffness, as well as problems up the kinetic chain, such as sacro-iliac and lumbar spine pain and dysfunction, and even scoliosis.
Improving foot function will help the body move better. Learn simple techniques that will improve foot function and get your clients back in contact with the ground with healthy strong feet.

Fitness Pitfalls: Scope of Practice for Nutrition, Injury Management/Prevention, and the Role of Recovery

Although nutritional coaching is a fundamental practice of most trainer-client relationships, what exactly are professionals allowed to do and what is considered beyond scope of practice? Likewise, injuries often can happen to anyone, regardless of fitness level and trainers often find themselves on the frontline of helping clients return to activity, but what should we do and not do? This session guides the fitness professional through best practices for nutritional coaching and injury management, all within his/her scope of practice. The role of recovery is also very important in the prevention of many overuse and overtraining injuries. We will explore overtraining syndrome (OTS), functional overreaching (FOR), and non-functional overreaching (NFOR), and will include strategies and solutions to help educate members on how to avoid common fitness injuries and training pitfalls that may lead to burnout or injury.

In the 5th century BC, Hippocrates said that “Eating alone will not keep a man well; he must also take exercise. For food and exercise… work together to produce health.” This relationship has been further defined by years of scientific research that shows a clear correlation between physical activity and health status. That is, those individuals who maintain an active and fit way of life live longer and healthier lives than those who do not. This association between physical activity and health persists in virtually every subgroup of the population, regardless of age, sex, race or environmental condition. The benefits of exercise are overwhelming, and it has been shown that exercise can be used therapeutically for any condition. Healthcare systems must begin to think of physical activity and exercise as a medication that should be prescribed to patients. Healthcare professionals must therefore collectively urge all patients to become more active and stay active throughout their lives. It’s imperative that all patients understand the risks of being sedentary, and the importance of exercise in treating and preventing chronic diseases. Exercise Professionals on the other hand, are uniquely qualified to help people on a journey of lifestyle change, particularly those with specific training and accredited certifications in health coaching. The fitness industry must therefore reinforce standards for well-qualified health and exercise professionals that will solidify trust between the medical and fitness communities, for the benefit of patients and consumers. There should be a merging of the fitness industry with the healthcare industry, so that both patients and clients can be better helped to find an appropriate exercise regimen. The Exercise is Medicine initiative therefore provides an innovative approach that, through a prescription, links the medical profession with physical activity professionals and community resources.
