"I Want It.. And I Don’t”: Facilitating Health Behaviour Change In Clients

Sudev Suthendran

Who wouldn’t want to change their eating and exercise patterns for the better? Clients want it… and yet, they don’t. As professionals with the goal of optimising health and wellness, we often work with individuals who would benefit from making lifestyle changes but who also may be resistant to or ambivalent about making them. Journeying alongside such clients may then be a frustratingly futile push-pull affair. So how do we empower and sustain behaviour change in such clients? This session aims to give professionals an understanding of what goes into behaviour change and to introduce ‘Motivational Interviewing’ - an evidence-based approach to facilitating health behaviour change.

Session objectives
Participants will:
- Have a theoretical understanding of the health behavior change process
- Understand what motivational interviewing is, and its core principles
- Understand the role of motivational interviewing in the behavioral change process – when to use it and with whom
- Learn to identify and respond to ‘change talk’ in clients using the core interviewing skills of motivational interviewing

I like Big Recovery and I Cannot Lie: Sports Supplements You Can’t Deny

Dr Jonathan Mike

Sports Supplements are high utilized in effort to gain maximum performance. However, recovery is of equal importance as one should recover twice as hard when training hard. Strategies to enhance recovery should be implemented to compensate from various training stimuli, including the science, application, and education of sports supplements. Since recovery-related activities often take place outside the formal training setting, the evaluation of individual differences is often difficult for coaches and may even result in a mismatch between coaches’ and athletes’ perception of recovery. While there is a whole host of supplements to use, this presentation will cover the science, efficacy and application of which supplements provide the most bang for your buck when training to recover optimally. We dive into the science and dispel fact from fiction for all trainers, coaches, athletes, and sports nutrition professionals.
