Thermal and fluid demands during endurance running in the heat

DR JASON LEE

Exercising in the heat often results in elevation in body temperature. This is the cumulative result of more heat being produced by the working muscles than heat loss to the environment coupled with hot and/or humid environmental conditions. Studies have shown that an accelerated increase in body temperature could impair both exercise performance (i.e. time trial) and exercise capacity (i.e. time to exhaustion). In order to optimise exercise tolerance in the heat, various strategies are employed to alter heat strain such as maximising aerobic fitness, heat acclimatisation, pre-exercise cooling and fluid ingestion. Specific to fluid ingestion, the recommended volume to ingest before and after exercise is widely accepted. There are however differing views regarding fluid replacement during exercise. Severe under or over hydration has ill effects and therefore there is a need to drink correctly. Optimising the cooling effect from hydration solution by manipulating drink temperature and thermal capacity can enhance exercise tolerance especially in the heat.

Together We Thrive: Fitness, Health and Healthcare In The Face of A Global Pandemic

Dr Fadzil

The COVID-19 crisis has fundamentally changed our lives. Many countries, including Singapore, have imposed lockdowns, increased social distancing, and implemented the use of face masks outside homes to reduce social contact to contain the pandemic. Access to the gyms, parks, community clubs and other public facilities used for social activities and recreation have been restricted. Group exercises and outdoor activities have also been discouraged. The elderly and those with chronic medical conditions, being very vulnerable to COVID-19, have also been advised not to leave their homes unnecessarily. In addition, schools and many jobs have transitioned to online platforms. All these are pertinent measures to tide us through the pandemic but they have also resulted in significant disruptions in everyday schedules for work, school, recreation, and social engagement routines.
This talk examines the impact of the COVID-19 global pandemic on physical activity engagement, dietary habits and psycho-social health based on local and international experiences. It highlights the need for all industries to come together to develop and evaluate interventions that take into account the social, cultural, physical and environmental factors in order to increase physical activity for chronic disease and COVID-19 prevention and management.

GROUP PANEL DISCUSSION (Does AI Spell the end for PT?)

Emma Masters
Kyle Riley
Owen Bowling

The ability to capture bio-data through wearable technology and other non-invasive means, as well as the role artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning play in the synthesis of large quantities of information are changing the landscape of the fitness industry. App-based technologies now boast the ability to create expertly-designed personal training programs with easy to follow instructions and demonstrations, as well as nutritional protocols taking into consideration genetics and a whole host of other biological data points to provide a truly customised meal plan that goes far beyond a person’s macro’s and calories. As exciting as these advancements are, there is a voice of concern in the back of the mind of every PT asking the
question, where does that leave us?
Will such advancements replace the need for a 1-1 trainer or is there an opportunity to capitalise on this incredible technology to further enhance the client experience?
Join our expert panel as we discuss the future of the fitness industry and the role of the PT in a tech-driven world.

Your Brain on Exercise

Ryan Glatt

Health and fitness professionals have the opportunity to join allied health professionals in addressing the major epidemic of cognitive decline and neurodegenerative diseases, such as dementia and Alzheimer's disease. Although exercise has been proven to be beneficial to brain health and cognitive functioning, the precise exercise prescriptions are not clear to the general public or the industries of health and fitness. This has led to further confusion and leaves clients, patients, and caregivers wondering if they are doing all that is possible to stave off cognitive decline. This lecture will review the research on how certain modalities of exercise can differentially affect the brain, and provide an initial framework for the assessment and programming of cognitive health within exercise programs

Muscle vs Movement-Based Strength Training

Derrick Price

In a typical Strength Training workout, we often program our exercise selection based on the specific muscles we're looking to enhance. We call this Muscle-Based Strength Training.

Equally important is the idea of Movement-Based Strength Training, where the goal is to add strength to task-specific whole-body integrated movement patterns. With this form of Strength Training, we look to enhance muscle synergies, coordination and tissue tolerance within our fascial structures.

In this session, Derrick Price, Vice President of the Institute of Motion will walk you through how we consider both Muscle and Movement-based Strength Training when programming for Health and Human Performance.

Rethinking the fitness industry and building a sustainable PT business

Dexter Tay

The fitness industry has been synonymous with ‘functional training’ and HIIT for the past few years. However, as we inch closer and see the light at the end of this global pandemic, the needle has already shifted and the term ‘functional fitness’ has become redundant. To function, you must define design. The human organism evolved with a predatorial function. Human exercise is, therefore, only a substitute for the original purpose of hunting and protecting. Functional fitness should then restore your body and mind to where it could achieve that purpose. But what has been done by us, exercise professionals, to educate and advocate the health of our mind?

Understanding and building on this paradigm shift, how and what can we then do, to build a sustainable PT business and stay ahead of the curve?
